Rang-rang

Rang-rang (slit-tapestry) is an unusual textile produced by weavers on Nusa Penida, Bali that was endanger as very few weavers were left to produce the cloth. Unlike most weaving techniques, rang-rang which has diamond patterns, are created by using several weft threads that are woven in more complicated way.

Now the number of weavers has expanded as the technique is being taught to some local young women, thereby ensuring the re-emergence of rang-rang. These textiles have become very popular and are sought after by the elite Balinese and even fashion designers in Jakarta.

Geringsing

 

Geringsing is a textile created by the double woven method in the Bali Aga village of Tenganan Pegeringsingan in Bali. The demanding technique known in three places: India, Japan and Indonesia. In Indonesia it is only produced in the village of Tenganan.

Many have unique Hindu motifs such as a bird’s eye view of a mandala with a sacred center from which everything radiates. Others feature designs clearly inspired by frangipani flower (cempaka). The palette of geringsing is typically red, neutral, and black. Geringsing are regarded as sacred cloths, “ascribed supernatural properties, especially to assist in forms of healing, including exorcism.”
