Yee Sang or Lo Hei are usually eaten during Chinese Lunar New Year as it is a symbol of abundance, prosperity and good fortune. For those unfamiliar with this dish, it is an Asian-style salad with various shredded vegetables and served with assorted toppings. Each Ingredient added has corresponding auspicious meaning to it.
HOW TO EAT?
Gathering around the table and a leader will say: Gong Xi Fa Cai, Xing Nian Kuai Le, Wan Shi Ru Yi. It means: Have a prosperous Lunar New Year that is filled with abundance of fortune!
THE INGREDIENTS:
1. Lemon Squeezing: Da Ji Da li symbolized good luck and auspiciousness
2. Mixing Salmon: Nian Nian You Yu symbolized surplus and abundance
3. Salmon over radish: Bu bu Gao Sheng symbolized increasing in business profit
4. Pepper and 5 spices powder (green and Red Packet): Shuang Xi Ling Men symbolized flourishing business
5. Oil: Shi shi Shun Li symbolized business will be smooth sailing
6. Plum Sauce: Tian Tian Mi Mi symbolized life will be sweet
7. Fried Golden crisps; Pien Din Huang Jing symbolized the ground that you walked will be filled with gold
After all ingredients added, everyone on cue prceed to toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks while saying, “HUAT AH!!” out loud to mark the start of prosperous New Year. It’s believed that the higher you toss the greater your fortunes!
